Many of friends and clients ask me how to get more targeted traffic to their websites. There are multiple methods to meet this goal, but it really depends on your advertising budget. One of the fastest and easiest ways to get a burst of massive targeted traffic is through PPC (Pay Per Click). Warning! PPC is not for the faint at heart. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you can lose your shorts!
How does Pay Per Click work? Google and other search engines, as you know, get paid for advertising. When you perform a search for a well-known “keyword” like “email marketing”, you will see some advertisements at the very top of the page and most likely down the right-hand side. These advertising bid (yes, just like an auction) for the top spots down the right-hand side of the page. They bid for specific words that you and I type into the search function. Depending on how much they bid will determine the order they appear in the right column. What they are bidding on, is the price they will pay Google (or other search engine) for each and every click that a web visitor makes on their link. (This link, of course, takes the web visitor to the intended website.)
So, this, as you can imagine, is VERY targeted traffic. Another example might be “dog training”. This is another highly competitive PPC bidding “campaign”. Several dollars are spent advertising on the search engine results pages (SERPs) for this keyword term.
When a web visitor clicks, as I mentioned they are generally taken to a sales page, product page or some other sales type of landing page where they hold you eventually spend money.
How you might lose your shorts:
PPC keyword bidding can be as low as 5 cents on low competition keywords. But, on major competition keywords such as dog training or weight loss, some companies are willing to pony up $25, 75 or even more than $100 per click. These big companies have the deep pockets to do this. Don’t even try to compete with them. You’ll lose your shorts!
PPC is one of the major targeted traffic secrets. It’s a huge market, lining many of the major search engine’s pockets. Generally, because beginners don’t know how to market in this arena correctly. And, the search engine companies often send out $50 or $100 coupons to entice you to market via PPC with them. Also, your first time out, you’ll get excited when you see a bunch of “click throughs” to your sales page or website. After your initial funding (because, you have to fund the PPC campaign before they give you the additional dollars indicated on the coupon) you will spend more to see more clicks! Emotions take over and you begin to think you’re about to make major sales and then you don’t.
Why didn’t I make a ton of sales with such targeted traffic, P.j.??
Generally, when I’m asked this question, it’s a simple fact that the landing page (could also be the sales page) that the web visitor hits after the click, is totally useless. There are several key ingredients to a successful sales page: professional graphics, tempting products images, bonus items, etc. That’s an entirely different discussion though. There is something you can do to push your sales through the roof if this is or has happened to you.
Introducing Targeted Traffic and Email Marketing
Regardless, if you were using PPC to gain targeted traffic or some other means, if you’re not using an “opt-in” of some sort, you are losing your audience and passing up major chances to entice visitors and make that initial sale. (And, once sold, if your product is solid, they will buy again and again.)
It’s been said time and time again in online marketing – “The money is in the list”
Your list of potential clients is pure gold. Please allow me to emphasize this point: Your list can very well be the life-blood of your company. Okay, so you may be a successful business owner and sales are fantastic. Good for you. But, if you’re going to market online and want your sales to explode exponentially, a solid “opt-in” list can blow sales past any previous years margins. It’s been proven time and time again.
Here’s how it works – You setup a “squeeze page” as your landing page. When, people click on a link to your website (be it PPC or via some other means) the first thing you do is entice them to “opt-in”. An opt-in is where they give you permission to send them your newsletter and other news-worthy company or product announcements. Yes, just like subscribing to your local daily newspaper.
Statistics have shown that readers need to see an opt-in newsletter (email) about a specific product promotion about seven times before they finally decide to buy. Therefore, if you grab their email address when they first hit your website, and build a relationship with them over email, then, you can pitch them offers from time to time – again and again. These subscribers will become loyal followers and Buyers when this is done correctly. There are several email marketers that do just this and don’t even have their own products to sell. They simply earn a commission sending promotional emails to their list of highly-targeted subscribers.
Rapport and relationship-building is a must if you plan to use email marketing. Give your readers a reason to open that email. Respect them and give them something for value. You don’t have to give away the farm, but you need to give them a reason to keep reading your emails and not just delete it along with the various SPAM emails we all receive daily. Your initial email (welcome to my list) is crucial. Free Tip: Teach them something related to your niche or offer them a discount on certain items with a code that they can bring in or enter on your website.
Email marketing can totally explode sales for just about any business with an online presence. Additionally, anyone wishing to quit their 9-to-5 day job can learn to sell other people’s products for huge commission paychecks. Either way, there is huge money to be made with highly targeted traffic combined with the power of a solid list of loyal email subscribers.
