Website templates have a number of advantages but people should also consider their share of disadvantages. For instance, it may not be easy to customize a website template to suit their requirements. If this is so, they need the required skills or the software to do it on their own.

  1. They are not unique and exclusive.

Since website templates are downloaded from the internet, they are accessible to many, other users. Therefore, these templates are not unique and exclusive to a person, company or business. When people use them, they may end up with a website that looks like several others. To make sure that no one uses the same website template, they may need to pay a hefty price for it. The problem is, other customers may have downloaded and used it before they even saw it. So, if they want an exclusive design for their company or personal use, they need a custom web design.

  1. There are limitations when it comes to customization.

There is only a certain point to which a website template can be tweaked. For this reason, it may not be suitable to their needs. In case there is a lot of web content and they choose a website template with limited space, the additional text might change how the layout looks by stretching it. By this time, they may have realized that the template does not work for them though they have already paid for it and may have downloaded it.

  1. Customization requires specific software.

There are website templates that can easily be customized, edited and updated with the use of Microsoft Frontpage and other available web authoring software but some are more complex that they require some knowledge in coding, website-building and photo-editing. They should, somehow, be knowledgeable in Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash or HTML code. They may not have the skills or software to edit, customize and update their site. If this is the case, they might need to hire a web developer to do the job of customizing and/or updating their web template.

  1. Image optimization requires skills.

In order for web pages to load fast, they need to know about optimizing images for the web. When they do not have the skills required as well as the photo-editing software for image optimization, this will make the website development process slow down and they will need the help of a web developer.

  1. They will have to use search engine optimization.

Website templates only provide the frame of a site and are not optimized to be found by search engines. In order to attract search engines, they should give importance to their web content. They should realize that search engines are more drawn to text than images. Website templates that have lots of graphics as well as Flash animation effects are captivating however, these take some time to load plus these will not drive search engines to their website. Therefore, no matter how great a Flash website looks, it might end up below the search engine rankings.
